I opened a correspondence with the author of a book I read recently.
I wanted to share part of his letter to me, anonymously:
-------
Our Lord is first and foremost a Teacher. You do not encounter Him without learning. Joseph's comment that a man is saved no faster than he gains knowledge is likely a comment born from his encounters with the Lord. In the JS-H he writes that "many other things did he speak to me which I cannot write at this time" (which I am paraphrasing so it isn't likely the exact words). I think Joseph was surprised by what all comes through in such a setting; just as I have been.
He lives.
He does make Himself known to mankind.
He is as engaged with those who seek Him today as He ever was.
He can be known.
He can be seen.
He is willing to minister; and retains a ministry still which involves every one of us. He is kind and patient. But has the good nature to be bemused at our misunderstandings and to work patiently to help us overcome them. He will stretch you beyond what you think He ought. But, as you will come to realize, He knows your capacities better than do you. So you will grow to trust Him more than to trust even your own judgment about yourself. He's not influenced by the petty self-interests and insecurities which encumber our own self-concepts. He is more generous in valuing our strengths, less critical of our shortcomings and weaknesses, and ready to forgive and move you forward than we imagine. The "light of Christ" described in the scriptures is always positive, always good, always creative; and it proceeds from Him. He is its center. Therefore to encounter Him is to encounter this profoundly positive wonderful Being. Although the repeated use of "light" to describe His glory is in fact a good physical description; the word also connotes a more important description of His influence and radiance. It is "light" in the sense of enlightenment, and joyful consciousness of everything good.
